Experiencing Nature Through Every Sense: PPV Returns to the Bolsa Chica Nature Conservancy

On Saturday, September 26, Partners for Pediatric Vision (PPV) returned to the Bolsa Chica Nature Conservancy for a morning of exploration, hands-on learning, and connection with nature.
This special family outing gives children with vision loss the opportunity to experience the wetlands in a way that goes beyond simply "seeing" the landscape. Through touch, sound, conversation, and exploration, the morning offered a meaningful way to discover the unique coastal environment of Bolsa Chica.
Hands-On Discovery
The adventure began with an introduction to the wetlands and an opportunity to explore different animal furs through touch. Feeling the differences in texture provided a fun and accessible way to learn about wildlife and encouraged curiosity before heading out onto the trails.
With guidance from the Bolsa Chica Conservancy team, the group then made its way through the wetlands, learning about the plants, wildlife, and ecosystem that make this protected habitat so special.
For children with vision loss, experiences like these can make nature more tangible. Touching different textures, listening to the sounds of the wetlands, and experiencing the environment firsthand turn learning into something that can be explored through multiple senses.
Volunteers Making a Difference
We were grateful to be joined by volunteers from the National Charity League, Peninsula Chapter (NCL), who generously shared their time with PPV.
Their presence and kindness helped make the morning even more welcoming. From joining in the activities to exploring the wetlands alongside our participants, their support was a wonderful reminder of the difference community partners and volunteers can make.
Connection Beyond the Trail
At Partners for Pediatric Vision, our family events are about more than visiting a new place. They create opportunities for children with vision loss to explore their surroundings, try new experiences, build confidence, and simply enjoy time with their families and community.
Even a small gathering can create meaningful moments. This beautiful morning at Bolsa Chica was filled with curiosity, conversation, hands-on discovery, and memories to take home.
We extend a heartfelt thank you to the Bolsa Chica Conservancy for once again welcoming PPV and creating an engaging experience for our participants. We are also incredibly thankful to the National Charity League, Peninsula Chapter volunteers for giving their time and helping make the day special.
We look forward to continuing to create opportunities that allow children with vision loss and their families to experience, explore, and connect with the world around them.
